As we are currently going through a warm patch (well, at the time of recording anyway), the HPR Beer Garden returns to provide some refreshment in the heat with a glass of cold and refreshing lager. Dave chooses Super Bock from Portugal, whilst Kevie picks City Limits Amber Lager from the tiny Dog Falls Brewing Co in Inverness.

Märzen

The German lager style Märzen is pronounced /MARE-tsən/. The name comes from the month März (March) when it was traditionally brewed a bit stronger to survive the summer months. Today it's usually served at occasions like the Oktoberfest in Munich or the Wasn in Stuttgart.

BTW: "Helles" is not a pale ale (ales are bottom-fermented) but a pale lager ("hell" = light, bright).

The reason why the USA uses Adjuncts in our Lager

There's actually two origins as to why. One was because of WW2 and needing to ration certain cereal grains for the war effort and prior to that is because German immigrants needed them to make their beer clear. The barley in the USA at the time would always make the beer cloudy and the German Immigrants were like absolutely not so they added rice and corn into the mix so the beer would be clear like back home
